OK, so the real question is: how long can we leave the solids to settle before having to pump them out. The longer they settle the lower will be the sediment height. If we decide that 24 hours is the longest time, then we can follow the characteristic up (the blue line on the diagram). This will provide another design, based on the longest time we can leave the system to settle before needing to reuse the tank (i.e. 24 hours).

Assuming that the maximum permissible time for settling is 24 hours, the height of this characteristic after 24 hours is (cm):

d) 56.0
