Problems 14.6

Question 2.i

The settling chamber below is to be used to collect particles 50 micron diameter and 2000 kg m-3 density from a stream of 10 m3 s-1 of standard air. The chamber is 1.5 m high and wide. To start with, use Stokes’ settling equation and assume a gas viscosity of 1.8x10-5 Pa s, and density of 1.2 kg m-3.

settling chamber

Note that air flow in is on the left and air flow out is on the right.

The particle settling velocity is (m s-1):

  a) 0.00303
b) 0.151
c) 1.51x10-6
c) 0.00272
Note, this calculation is the same for a dust particle in static air.
