Filtration

Problems 4.10

Question 2.ii
The volume of solids (i.e. dry solids) in the slurry is 200 ml, look carefully at the rest of the data for something to help you determine the volume of liquid retained in the cake (assume 100% saturation of the cake formed). This means that the gaps (pores) between the particles are full of liquid.

Five litres of a 10% w/w slurry of chalk (density of 2670 kg m-3) in water (viscosity of 0.001 Pa s) was filtered under constant pressure on a filter leaf of 0.0314 m2 area. The specific surface of the chalk is 3x106 m-1 and the cake can be assumed to have had a porosity of 50%.

The volume of water retained in the filter cake was (cm3):

  a) 400
b) 200
c) 100
d) 0
