fluid flow in porous media

Problems 3.8

Question 1
The equations you require will be reviewed when you need to use them. Initially, this question starts by calculating some of the physical conditions given by the powder forming the plug, the pressure drop and superficial velocity. You will then use all of this data in the Kozeny Carman equation to calculate the specific surface area per unit volume of the powder. You should know what all these terms mean before you start the problems.

A powder is contained in a vessel to form a cylindrical plug 0.8 cm in diameter and 3 cm long. The powder density is 2.5 g cm-3 and 2.20 grams of powder was used to form the plug.

The porosity (i.e. the same as the voidage) inside the plug of powder is (-):

  a) 0.58
b) 0.42
c) 0.75
d) 0.25
Note, porosity, or voidage, is the void volume divided by total volume
